The "African Network of Basin Organizations (ANBO)" was created on the occasion of its Inaugural General Assembly held in Dakar from 10 to 11 July 2002 as an International Non-Profit Organization for an indefinite period. Since its creation, ANBO has been constituted as a voluntary network of basin, lake and aquifer organizations set up with the assistance of the International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO). ANBO was created to respond to the need to coordinate and strengthen cooperation among African OBs. As a result, ANBO groups these entities as a single, representative umbrella organization within the framework of the African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW), which coordinates the water policy within the New Partnership for Africa's Development ( NEPAD) of the African Union.

Initially, the Network was set up with two main objectives as follows:

dev durable

Promote the integrated management of water resources in river basins, lakes and aquifers as an essential tool for sustainable development;

gestion de l'eau

Establish a regional framework to support and exchange experiences and expertise among members for enhanced dialogue, harmonization and coordination of water management policies, strategies and practices.

ANBO's activities are geared towards the legal and educational frameworks defined in the statutes. Currently, ANBO receives funding through an annual (modest) membership fee. Support is also provided by the Senegal River Development Organization (OMVS) through the hosting of ANBO and the free provision of office space and other support services.
